Since I Left You is an album from Australian electronic music group “The Avalanches”. The album itself is composed entirely out of samples from forgotten records around the world; Taking sounds and melodies that were once buried in a bargain bin and breathing new life into them.
A monolith of sound; It’s estimated that the album contains over 3500 samples from music across time. Together, they form an oddly nostalgic, funk-driven auditory adventure.

The Visual Direction takes inspiration from the musical themes present in the album: bright and upbeat with melancholic undertones.

The Photography drew inspiration from the album’s initial concept. Avalanches member
Robbie Chater elaborates:
“[the idea] was an international search for love... the idea of a guy following a girl around the world and always being one port behind. And that was just because we had all these records from all over the world...”
I wanted to portray this character’s
optimistically sorrowful
journey. For the photoshoot, I knew I had to call in a professional model...

Digitally re-coloring the image elevated the photography to a state of heightened reality. From a distance, it seems like a dream-like world—a vibrant sunset resting above a crisp blue ocean. But upon closer inspection, the intentionally rough pixelated edges of the clouds and water communicate that this dream world has been digitally crafted.
